Mood & Anxiety

When facing depression and anxiety you may feel alone, and as though no one can understand you, your problems, and the challenges you are facing. The first step towards fighting back against these isolating feelings is finding a therapist you can trust and feel connected to.

LGBTQ+ Affirmative Therapy

Finding your place in the world when you identify as part of the LGBTQ+ acronym can at times feel isolating and complicated. Developing relationships, finding a sense of community, and feeling secure in your sense-of-self, each come with specific challenges. LGBTQ+ affirmative therapy can help.

ADHD in Adults

So often a diagnosis of ADHD can be seen as an immense challenge in one's life, despite the existence of multiple techniques to harness the speed and creativity of an ADHD mind. Let me help you find effective ways to make your ADHD become a gift rather than a disorder.

Performance Anxiety

The ability to perform up to the best of your abilities when you have a lot on the line is something that challenges us all. Let me help you increase your chances of success.

Relationships

It is so easy for those in intimate relationships to lose sight of the ways they communicate with each other. Let me help you find ways to reconnect with the feelings that originally brought you together, and to enrich your connections with each other.

Group Therapy

Have you recently lost an important relationship in your life, without them telling you what went wrong? Group offers a unique and important opportunity to explore ways to form deeper and more lasting connections with others.

David A. Heilman, Psy.D. - Washington, DC Licensed Psychologist

Insight Therapy: Many people come to therapy after experiencing emotional distress that has led them to feel overwhelmed and as though they have lost direction in, and control of, their life. I work collaboratively with my clients to explore ways in which they can effectively regain a sense of empowerment, meaning, and control in their lives. One of the most difficult parts of deciding to seek out help and support from a therapist is choosing the right person for you. While there are many options out there, of utmost importance in your decision is finding a therapist you “click” with and feel connected to. If you find yourself connecting with the content on my website, we might be a good match to work together. If so, it is my hope that I might be able to join you on your journey towards greater self-understanding, compassion, and insight.

Central to my work is the concept that our relationship, and the authentic exploration of that relationship, will better help you make meaning out of other important relationships. While this work can be challenging, and even frightening at times, it can lead to greater emotional and social fulfillment, improvements in mood, and increased freedom from panic and worry.

Being trained as a generalist, I have enjoyed working effectively with a wide variety of individuals. However, I do now specialize in LGBTQ+ affirmative therapy, Adult ADHD, performance anxiety, mood & anxiety concerns, and couples/relationship challenges. It would be a pleasure speaking with you about how I might best be of help to you. I am currently seeing new clients in my Dupont Circle psychotherapy office, and I look forward to answering any of your questions.
